Berghahn Books is seeking a Marketing Assistant to support its global marketing activities. The position, based in our Oxford offices, requires a responsible, enthusiastic and motivated person who can handle multiple tasks in a busy small-firm environment.

Excellent administrative and organisational abilities, strong written and spoken communication skills, as well as good attention to detail will also be highly beneficial for this role.

The Marketing Assistant will report to the Marketing Manager, and support with a range of marketing activities to promote Berghahn Books’ extensive portfolio of frontlist and backlist titles, spanning the Humanities and Social Sciences.

As an independent press, this entry-level position will offer an exciting opportunity to learn many facets of the publishing process, while putting you at the forefront of wide-ranging marketing strategies in the scholarly publishing space.

Overview of the role

Your key responsibilities will include:

Marketing support

1. Subject and title marketing support

  • Help to create marketing plan templates for frontlist key subject areas.
  • Assist with author care/author comms as required e.g. responding to author requests and queries via email.
  • Process marketing gratis copies and review copies requests.
  • Generate/distribute gratis shopping cart discount codes for authors and conferences.
  • Assist with librarian outreach using details from author marketing forms.
  • Support society-linked title outreach/announcements.

2. Conferences

  • Support conference planning, administration and marketing activities such as: creating conference marketing materials e.g. order forms, shipping materials, flyers, social graphics.

3. Marketing reporting

  • Record monthly usage performance statistics and metrics for marketing review – eg Mailchimp, eMarketing and social media results.

4. Marketing collateral

  • Create flyers for individual titles, key series and events.
  • Assist with creation of social media graphics.
  • Collate title information to create list promotions.

5. Social media

  • Assist with social media promotion for new titles, awareness days, book launches, conferences etc.
  • Monitor and engage with social media for regular title promotion.
  • Assist with writing organic social media copy to promote new and backlist titles across channels.
  • Assist with scheduling of social media content across channels.
  • Contribute new content ideas for organic social across channels.

6. Website updates

  • Update featured titles list on the website on a continual basis.
  • Update and edit blog posts on the website.

Administration Support

  • Answer phones, take messages, reply to queries to the general publicity email account.
  • Provide customer support and serve as individual customer liaison to Ingram.
  • Provide marketing administrative support as needed.
  • Monitor Gratis email address for Gratis related queries and support as required.
  • You may, from time to time, be called upon to provide reasonable assistance in any area of the Company's activities as circumstances require.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with a good command of English grammar and spelling
  • Proficiency in Word processing applications and Excel are vital
  • Knowledge of MailChimp, as well as basic desktop design skills, such as familiarity with Canva, are not essential but would be beneficial for the role
  • An interest in scholarly publishing is valuable and a background in Social Sciences or the Humanities a plus
