Job description

General Summary

Bonnier Books UK is looking for a talented and highly creative Designer or Senior Designer to join its internationally renowned Big Picture Press imprint.

The successful candidate will project manage and creatively guide the development of highly illustrated books, making sure all titles are produced to an exceptional design quality and to the technical specifications required. As part of a supportive and friendly team, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the programme through new ideas and acquisitions.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate good knowledge of both the non-fiction and picture book markets, demonstrate exceptional design and typography skills, and who has an eye for the very best talent in illustration. The Big Picture Press list comprises picture books, non-fiction and gift titles, so an understanding of different age ranges and formats is necessary. Knowledge of the graphic novel market and merchandising would also be of interest.

This is a fantastic creative opportunity for someone looking to further their career in illustrated book design.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Creatively guide and coordinate titles in line with creative briefs, making sure all files are coordinated through the correct design approval workflow.
  • Research, brief, lay out, art edit and sign off on a wide range of books across different formats and age ranges to make the best product possible.
  • Make sure all files are to the technical accuracy required and to the design quality expected during all stages – final files, plotter, and advance stages.
  • Research and suggest ideas for the future publishing list, showing awareness of marketplace and trends.
  • Project-manage books in partnership with Editorial and Production, making sure key milestones are adhered to and final files are supplied on time.
  • Liaise and manage 3rd-party contributors, including packagers, illustrators and other freelance agents that are needed to create a project.
  • Problem-solve and/or escalate problems in the correct manner and in good time to allow schedules to be hit.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Excellent technical skills in key software (Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud)
  • Experience managing illustrators, photographers, designers and agents
  • In addition to being a fantastic designer, you will have excellent organisational skills, experience with people management, the ability to maintain schedules and meet deadlines and liaise closely with the editorial, sales and production teams to ensure that all projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in a design role in publishing, ideally with experience designing covers for commercial non-fiction
  • A positive team player with a pro-active approach
  • A clear communicator, capable of working effectively with various teams and functions across the business
