Job description

Be a part of one of the fastest growing independent publishers in the UK

About Boldwood

Boldwood Books is an award-winning independent, global fiction publishing house. We have published over 800 titles, signed over 150 authors and sold 24 million books across the world since 2019. Boldwood guarantees global publishing of every title in 10 formats across eBook, Audiobook, and Print on publication day across all English language territories. We were awarded Small Press of the Year at 2023 British Book Awards and Independent Publisher of the Year at the 2022 Independent Publishing Awards.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly organised, self-motivated individual to join our fast-paced, collaborative Production Department as our Production Assistant. If you are efficient, responsible, unafraid of a challenge, technologically minded and like getting things done, then this role could be for you!

The Production Assistant is required to work closely with all other Boldwood departments (Editorial, Sales and Marketing), liaise with our authors, and deal with our key suppliers daily.

This is an entry level role which will give the candidate excellent experience in how the publishing machine works.

All Boldwood staff work remotely and we welcome applicants located anywhere in the UK.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Production Manager, key tasks will include creation of eBook, Print and Audio files suitable for distribution with our suppliers; ‘art working’ covers; making text and cover file corrections; ordering physical book copies for our authors; various production-operations administrative tasks; and supporting their production colleagues on a variety of projects.

  • Portfolio management of your own book titles, responsible for bringing all final elements together to ensure your books publish on time, on cost, meeting the required publishing standards.
  • Finalising book files for distribution and print: including ‘art working’, ‘pre-flighting’ and checking e-proofs before ‘sign off.’
  • Working closely with our freelance designers to produce quality cover files, maintaining submission deadlines.
  • Updating cover and text files for re-editions, reprint corrections - working alongside the Production-Editorial management team and the Sales and Marketing departments.
  • Dealing quickly with any eBook, audiobook or print quality control issues that may arise.
  • Author liaison, including ordering book copies.
  • Playing a key part in keeping the production workflow on track.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • IT skills: working knowledge of Word, Excel essential; some experience with Creative Suite highly desirable: Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop. Prior experience of using Gmail or Outlook in a business environment would be beneficial.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • Good organisation, multi-tasking, and prioritisation skills.
  • Proven ability of working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable meeting a demanding schedule and fluctuating workload.
  • Proven experience working well independently and as part of a team.

Please apply with a CV and covering letter to the Head of Production: [email protected].
